Bruce Schneier, la citazione e Laurie Anderson: storia di un aforisma sulla tecnologia

Nel suo nuovo album, Laurie Anderson cita una frase che ho reso celebre. Non mi nomina, ma la dice uguale: If you think technology will solve your problems, you don’t understand technology and you don’t understand your problems.

Lo ha ripetuto anche in un’intervista: Of course, it’s ridiculous, outrageous, blah, blah, blah. But, I mean, my favorite quote on this is from a cryptologist who said, ‘If you think technology will solve your problems, you don’t understand technology — and you don’t understand your problems.’ And I think I’m completely on board with that.

In realtà la frase originale è di Roger Needham. Suonava così: If you think cryptography can solve your problem, you don’t understand your problem and you don’t understand cryptography.

Io l’ho modificata nel 2000, nella prefazione del mio libro Secrets and Lies: If you think technology can solve your security problems, then you don’t understand the problems and you don’t understand the technology.

Non ricordo perché non citai Needham per nome nel libro. Avrei dovuto. Da allora ho usato la frase con regolarità. A un certo punto ho tolto la parola “security” e adesso la dico più o meno come la dice Anderson. Qualche volta uso il singolare, qualche volta il plurale. A volte dico “the problem” e “the technology”. Ma la versione che finisce con “technology” suona meglio.

E non finisce qui. Un amico mi ha girato email del 1997 in cui Needham scriveva: “Butler Lampson e io attribuiamo l’uno all’altro la frase.” Io all’epoca scrivevo: “Needham dice che l’ha detta Robert Morris. Morris dice che l’ha detta Needham. Nessuno sa chi l’ha inventata.”

Quell’anno l’ho detta dal palco del Defcon. Non ero certo l’autore.
